UCLA Rowing Closes Day One at Clemson

The UCLA women's rowing team competed in eight races over the course of a morning and an afternoon session at the Clemson Invitational on Lake Hartwell in South Carolina on Saturday.
The Bruins' varsity eight raced to a pair of second-place finishes. In the morning session, UCLA posted a time of 6:48.20, crossing the finish line behind No. 4 Ohio State (6:37.50). The Bruins finished ahead of No. 20 Louisville (6:51.50), Michigan State (6:52.60), Columbia (7:01.00), Oklahoma (7:30.00) and Tennessee (7:07.00).
UCLA's varsity eight registered a time of 6:30.10 in its late afternoon race on Lake Hartwell. No. 13 Indiana won the race with a time of 6:29.00. The Bruins finished ahead of No. 17 Harvard (6:30.50), Syracuse (6:33.50), No. 20 Louisville (6:35.30), Pennsylvania (6:37.30) and Clemson (6:40.60).
“Today was a good day of racing for the Bruins,” UCLA head coach Amy Fuller Kearney said. “We are really pleased with the progress each crew made between the morning and afternoon races. The team is really united and motivated, and it's exciting to watch them continue to work and improve. We are looking forward to the races on Sunday.”
The Bruins' second varsity eight raced to a third-place finish in the morning session before finishing fourth in the afternoon session. In the morning, the 2V8+ recorded a time of 7:03.40, trailing No. 4 Ohio State (6:52.10) and No. 20 Louisville (7:00.80), respectively. UCLA crossed the finish line ahead of Tennessee (7:12.80), Michigan State (7:15.90), Columbia (7:18.20) and Oklahoma (7:18.80).
UCLA's second varsity eight posted a time of 6:35.90 in the afternoon. No. 13 Indiana finished first with a time of 6:33.00, while Syracuse was second (6:33.60) and No. 20 Louisville was third (6:34.80). UCLA finished ahead of Pennsylvania (6:39.60), Harvard (6:41.30) and Clemson (6:44.00).
The Bruins' varsity four crew recorded a second-place finish in the morning session before finishing third in its heat in the afternoon session. In the morning, UCLA finished just 1.7 seconds behind No. 4 Ohio State – the Bruins posted a time of 7:51.90 while Ohio State finished the race in 7:50.20. Rounding out the other five competitors were Oklahoma (7:55.80), No. 20 Louisville (7:57.10), Tennessee (8:00.10), Columbia (8:14.10) and Michigan State (8:36.30).
In its afternoon race, UCLA's varsity four crossed the finish line third with a time of 7:24.40, just four seconds behind second-place competitor Harvard (7:20.40). Syracuse won the race with a final time of 7:18.00. The Bruins finished ahead of No. 20 Louisville (7:25.30), Clemson (7:32.40), No. 13 Indiana (7:38.30) and Pennsylvania (7:40.80).
The Bruins' second varsity four finished fourth in its morning race and posted a third-place finish in the afternoon. In the morning session, the 2V4+ recorded a time of 8:06.20. No. 20 Louisville won the race with a time of 7:34.40, while Ohio State (7:45.20) finished second and Oklahoma (7:59.60) was third. Columbia (8:25.90) and Tennessee (8:41.40) trailed the Bruins, respectively.
UCLA's 2V4+ finished third in the afternoon session with a time of 7:41.50, trailing Syracuse (7:35.50) and No. 20 Louisville (7:39.50). The Bruins crossed the finish line ahead of Clemson by two-tenths of one second (7:41.70). No. 13 Indiana (7:45.20) finished fifth while Pennsylvania was sixth (7:58.30).
UCLA will race four boats on Sunday morning on Lake Hartwell to close the two-day Clemson Invitational. The Bruins' varsity eight crew is scheduled to race at 8:38 a.m. (ET), followed by the second varsity eight at 9:04 a.m. (ET). UCLA's varsity four will compete at 9:30 a.m. (ET) and the second varsity four will race at 9:56 a.m. (ET).
