
UCLA Field Athletes Go Big at Triton

LA JOLLA, Calif. – The UCLA track and field team was only represented by field athletes this weekend but that small group dominated the Triton Invitational, held on the campus of UC San Diego.
The weekend was highlighted by the Bruin shot put duo of Nicholas Scarvelis and Braheme Days. Finishing only behind the world leader Joe Kovacs, Scarvelis launched a new personal best and more importantly an Olympic qualifying mark of 67-7.50 to increase his national-lead and move up to fourth all-time at UCLA.
Days uncorked a nearly two-foot personal best when he hit 66-3 to etch his name in the UCLA top-10 with the sixth best throw of all-time. The throw Saturday currently ranks third in the country.
Stamatia Scarvelis finished fifth overall and second in the collegiate competition with a throw of 195-10 in the hammer. She later recorded a personal best in the discus with of throw 176-11 to finish second overall.
The UCLA pole vaulters had a good showing in La Jolla as Greta Wagner finished second with a clearance of 13-3.50. Elleyse Garrett continues to improve on a weekly basis as she hit another personal best, also clearing 13-3.50 to place fifth. In the men's competition Reed Scale won the open competition with a mark of 15-11.
In the high jump Sage Stone finished second overall with a leap of 6-11.
Next weekend the Bruins will host their cross-town rivals in the annual UCLA vs. USC dual meet. The meet will take place on Sunday, May 1st beginning at 9 a.m. with the women's hammer throw and on the track at 12:30 p.m. with the women's steeple. The cross-town rivalry will air live on the Pac-12 Networks starting at 2:00 p.m. with the men's high jump and women's triple jump followed by the women's 400m on the track.
