Scarvelis Garners Pac-12 Honor Again

SAN FRANCISCO – For the second straight week senior Nicholas Scarvelis (Santa Barbara, Calif.) was named the Pac-12 Field Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday.
Scarvelis recorded a personal best for the second-straight week, posting a 67-7.50 (21.61m) in the shot put over the weekend at the Triton Invitational, finishing only behind world leader Joe Kovacs. Scarvelis' mark not only leads the NCAA but is also an Olympic qualifying standard.
He also moves up to fourth all-time in the UCLA record book, a list that includes former World Champion and Olympian John Godina. Scarvelis also holds the 16th best discus mark in the country at 192-10.
The Santa Barbara native leads a UCLA throws group that sports a total of five marks in the top 20 in the country. Braheme Days currently ranks third in the nation at 66-3.75 while freshman Dotun Ogundeji is 20th at 61-8.25.
On the women's side junior Torie Owers holds at No. 4 with a lifetime best throw of 57-5 while freshman Stamatia Scarvelis is 17th with a mark of 54-11.50.
UCLA will host rival USC on Sunday, May 1 at Drake Stadium. The field events will begin at 9 a.m. while the live Pac-12 Networks window will start at 2 p.m.
