April 28, 2016 | Men's Volleyball
It was announced on Thursday that UCLA's Micah Ma'a was selected by a nationwide voting committee as the 2016 Off the Block/Springbak, Inc National Server of the Year. It is the first time in the history of the award that a freshman has achieved this honor which recognizes the top individual serving performance from a NCAA Division I-II men's volleyball player during the regular season.
In the regular season, Ma'a recorded an MPSF-best 54 service aces and was ranked fourth in the nation with a 0.51 aces per set average. He had 13 matches with multiple aces, including a season-high seven aces against CSUN in January.
Ma'a shattered the old UCLA school freshman record of Gonzalo Quiroga (39) set in 2011. In the MPSF playoffs, he moved past Adam Naeve (56 - 2001) and Quiroga (56 -2014) and into the top spot on the all-time school rally scoring era list with a total of 57 aces.
Ma'a and the Bruins earned the No. 2 seed into the NCAA Men's Volleyball Tournament and will square off against the winner of the play-in match between Ohio State and George Mason (May 3) on Thursday, May 5 at Penn State. That match will be streamed on ncaa.com live at 5 p.m. PT. The championship match is scheduled for May 7 and will be televised by ESPN2 beginning at 5 p.m. PT.
