UCLA Falls to Stanford in Opening Game

April 08, 2016 | Baseball

LOS ANGELES – The UCLA Bruins fell to the Stanford Cardinal in game one of the weekend series, 4-1, on Thursday evening at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Griffin Canning (3-4) went all nine innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on five hits with five strikeouts to garner the loss. Stanford starter Chris Castellanos (4-1) earned the win, allowing just one run on five hits in 7.0 innings, while Colton Hock earned his third save.

The Bruins managed five hits in the game, spread among five different players. Sean Bouchard (0-for-3, RBI) did not get a hit, but drove in the lone run for UCLA.

Stanford (16-8, 5-2) got on the board first in the second inning on a two-out home run by Alex Dunlap. With a man on first, Dunlap turned a Canning fastball around and sent it over the left field fence to give the Cardinal the early 2-0 lead.

Then in the fourth inning, Jonny Locher backed that up with an RBI-single to lift Stanford to a three-run advantage.

UCLA (12-15, 4-6) responded in the bottom half of the fourth to pull back within two runs on a sacrifice-fly. After, Luke Persico doubled and Eric Filia singled to put runners on the corners, Bouchard brought the first Bruin run home on a long drive to right field.

The Cardinal would go on to get that run back in the seventh inning. After an error cost the Bruins, Tommy Edman drove in the fourth Stanford run on a sac-fly to right field, giving them a 4-1 lead.

The Bruins threatened in the eighth inning after Daniel Amaral and Trent Chatterton each singled to begin the frame. The next two UCLA batters were retired, but Kort Peterson earned a two-out walk to load the bases for Persico. The Bruin third baseman proceeded to fly out to left field, leaving the bases loaded, and effectively ending UCLA's night.

Game two between the Bruins and Cardinal will begin tomorrow at 7:05pm PT at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Tickets are available and can be purchased by visiting uclabruins.com/tickets or by calling 310-UCLA-WIN. The game can also be seen live on the Pac-12 Network or heard live at uclabruins.com.

Notes: Eric Filia has now reached base in all 27 games this season…Filia has not struck out since February 28, going 77 consecutive at-bats without a strikeout…Bouchard has driven in at least one run in 10 of his last 13 games, racking up a total of 21 RBI over his last 16 games…Brett Urabe is currently riding a six-game hit streak…Trent Chatterton has reached base in 13 consecutive games…Christoph Bono appeared in his 199th career game with UCLA…Griffin Canning posted his first career complete game and has now struck out at least five batters in every start this year.
