Bruins Advance to NCAA Round of 32

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The No. 27 UCLA women's tennis team advances to the Round of 32 in the 2016 NCAA Division I Women's Tennis Championship after downing No. 43 Notre Dame, 4-1, on Friday morning. The Bruins face fourth-seeded Ohio State on Saturday at 1 pm PDT.
UCLA (15-6, 6-3 Pac-12) got off to a hot start, clinching the doubles point on courts 1 and 2. At the top of the lineup, the seventh-ranked pair of Catherine Harrison and Kyle McPhillips blanked Quinn Gleason and Jane Fennelly. Notre Dame responded in the No. 3 spot, as Brooke Broda and Allison Miller downed Maia Magill and Kristin Wiley, 6-2. The deciding point came from court 2, where Terri Fleming and Alaina Miller defeated Mary Closs and Julie Vrabel, 6-4, to give the Bruins a 1-0 lead.

The Irish got on the board first in singles play, as Broda upended Wiley 6-2, 6-0. But UCLA again took the lead when No. 17 Harrison bested No. 49 Gleason 6-4, 6-0 on court 1. The Bruins continued this momentum, rattling off two more wins to clinch the match.
On court 2, McPhillips dispatched No. 84 Monica Robinson in straights to inch UCLA closer to victory. After dropping the first set on court 4, Alaina Miller rallied 7-5 in the second to force a third. The freshman clinched the match for the Bruins with a 6-4 win in the final set.
