UCLA Makes a Statement on First Day

LAWRENCE, Kan. – Despite battling the elements over the course of two days with constant schedule changes and weather delays, the UCLA track team put all of that aside to advance six athletes to the national meet on Friday from Rock Chalk Park.

In the first completed event of the west regional for the Bruins, senior Lane Werley punched his ticket for the second straight season to Eugene. This time Werley qualified in the 10,000m by placing 11th with a time of 29:58.90.

Junior Austin Hazel became the second Bruin on the day to punch his ticket to Eugene. Hazel leaped to a mark of 24-9.25 to earn his first trip to the national meet.

Senior Nick Hartle will make his third consecutive trip to the national meet as he won his heat and clocked the fifth fastest time on the day with a 1:48.24.

In just his second collegiate 400m hurdle race and from all the way in lane nine freshman Rai Benjamin qualified for the national meet by winning his heat with the fourth fastest time on the day with a 50.88.

In the women's long jump a pair of Bruins capped off the first full day as senior Kylie Price will once again be making an appearance at the national meet. The senior was second overall with a leap of 20-10.50. Sophomore Jessie Maduka punched her first ticket to nationals as she finished eighth overall with a mark of 20-1.75.

Sophomore Leon Powell wrapped up his season in the 100m with a time of 10.53 to place 26th overall. He will compete in the 4x100m relay and the 200m on Saturday.

Freshman Julia Rizk got her first NCAA postseason experience by placing 32nd in the 800m with a time of 2:10.25. Kim Mackay capped off her collegiate career by placing 40th with a time of 2:13.34.

Freshman Jasmine Stauffacher-Gray finished third in her heat and 17th overall in the 400m hurdles with a time of 58.68 to cap off a solid true freshman campaign. In the men's 400m hurdles senior Andre Chapman finished fifth in his heat and 22nd overall with a personal best time of 52.21.

Also in the 10k, senior Sergey Sushchikh finished in 20th with a time of 30:13.24 while sophomore Myles Smith was 42nd at 31:07.47.

In the steeple junior Emily Scharmann finished 18th overall with a time of 10:22.99. In the men's competition senior Nolan Dickson clocked a 9:28.66 to place 45th overall.

In the women's high jump freshman Lillianna Hebert placed 22nd at 5-7.25 while sophomore Kendall Gustafson also cleared 5-7.25 to place 24th overall. In the men's high jump sophomore Sage Stone just missed out as he finished tied for 14th at 6-11.50. Freshman Michael Burke was 23rd at 6-11.50 while junior Cody Crampton followed in 34th at 6-9.50.

In the women's pole vault freshman Greta Wagner finished 23rd at 13-0.25 while sophomore Elleyse Garrett was 30th with a clearance of 13-0.25.

The Bruins will continue NCAA West Regional action on Saturday with the men's discus at 9 a.m. CT. The women's 4x100m will start the track portion of the day at 10 a.m. CT.
