UCLA Loses Season Finale at Oregon St

May 29, 2016 | Baseball

CORVALLIS, Ore. – The UCLA Bruins concluded the regular season with a 6-0 loss to the Oregon State Beavers on Sunday afternoon at Goss Stadium.

Jake Bird (1-6) got the loss after allowing three runs on five hits with a career-high six strikeouts over six innings. Luke Heimlich (7-4) earned the win for OSU, throwing a complete game shutout with seven strikeouts.

The Bruin offense could only muster four hits in the defeat, led by Jake Pries (2-for-4) who notched his first career multi-hit game.

Oregon State (35-19, 16-14) took the lead early with a run in the first inning to jump ahead of the Bruins. Christian Donahue hooked a ball inside the bag at third for an RBI-single that brought Kyle Nobach in and gave the Beavers a 1-0 edge.

OSU then backed that up with a pair of runs in the second to extend its advantage. A wild pitch and a fielder's choice resulted in a three-run deficit for UCLA after two frames.

The Beavers continued to add to the lead with another three runs in the seventh inning. Following a bases loaded walk, Donahue cashed in again with a two-RBI single to give OSU a 6-0 lead.

UCLA (25-31, 12-18) as it had all weekend, struggled to generate runs, leaving another six runners on base in the loss. In the end, the Bruins fell to the Beavers for a third consecutive contest, 6-0.

The Bruins will miss the postseason for just the fourth time in John Savage's 12 years at the helm. Despite missing the postseason, Savage and the Bruins racked up their 11th consecutive 25+ win season.

Notes: Jake Bird set new single game career-highs in innings (6.0) and strikeouts (6)…Daniel Rosica notched his first career triple…This is the first time in UCLA recorded history that the Bruins have been shutout in each game of a three-game series…UCLA finishes the regular season with a record of 25-31 and 12-18 in the Pac-12 Conference…UCLA finishes 6-9 in weekend series…Luke Persico finishes the season as UCLA's leading hitter, hitting .323 on the season…Moises Ceja finishes with the lowest ERA at 2.60 and Griffin Canning tops the team in strikeouts with 95.
