
Bruins Roll the Waves to Advance

GULF SHORES, Ala., -- Fourth-seeded UCLA (21-7) knocked off third-seeded Pepperdine (20-5), eliminating the Waves with a hard-fought 3-2 win in the contender's bracket of the 2016 NCAA Beach Volleyball Championship on Saturday afternoon at Gulf Place Beach.
The Bruins will now face No. 5 Hawai'i, which sent UCLA into the contender's bracket in the first match of this tournament. The game will be televised by TruTV and will start around 4:30 p.m. CT/2:30 p.m. PT.
Pepperdine claimed the first point on court three when Corinne Quiggle and Skylar Caputo defeated Izzy Carey and Elise Zappia, 21-19, 21-17.
UCLA's freshman duo of Megan McNamara and Nicole McNamara tied it up at 1-1 with a straight-set win on court one over the Waves' Taylor Racich and Heidi Dyer, 22-20, 21-17.
Pepperdine reclaimed the lead at 2-1 with a straight-set win on court two when Delaney Knudsen and Kaity Bailey defeated Ivey Schmitt and Kamila Tan, 22-20, 21-19.
That left things to be decided on courts four and five where UCLA's Jessyka Ngauamo and Zana Muno defeated the Waves' Madalyn Roh and Anika Wilson, 21-19, 23-21 to tie it at 2-2.
Then the Bruins scored the final point on court five when Reily Buechler and Julie Consani got their second-straight win as a new duo, defeating Pepperdine's Samantha Cash and Sarah Seiber in three sets, 21-19, 15-21, 15-12.
