June 11, 2016 | Track & Field
EUGENE, Ore. – UCLA freshman Rai Benjamin closed out the 2016 season for the Bruins with a sixth place finish in the 400m hurdles on Friday at Historic Hayward Field.
In less than one month on the track due to injury and in just his fourth collegiate hurdle race, Benjamin clocked a lifetime best 49.82 to finish sixth overall and earn first team All-America honors. The time of 49.82 betters his eighth fastest time in UCLA history.
In the discus ring, senior Nicholas Scarvelis capped off his remarkable Bruin career by placing 18th with a throw of 178-10. Freshman Dotun Ogundeji, also in his second event of the championships, placed 20th with a throw of 176-1.
The Bruin men finished 18th overall with 12 points. Florida won the title while Arkansas was second and Texas A&M placed third.
The season isn't completely over for UCLA as numerous past and present Bruins will be competing in the Rio Olympics and at the junior level.
