Francis Up for NCAA Woman of the Year
June 21, 2016 | Gymnastics
UCLA gymnast Danusia Francis has been nominated for the 2016 NCAA Woman of the Year award. The award honors graduating female college athletes who have exhausted their eligibility and distinguished themselves throughout their collegiate careers in academics, athletics, service and leadership.
Francis capped off an outstanding career in 2016 with a postseason sweep on balance beam, capturing the NCAA, NCAA Regional and Pac-12 titles on her signature event. One of the most consistent gymnasts in school history, Francis hit 133 of 135 routines without a fall during her four years, including 74 in a row to finish her career. She also scored a perfect 10 on balance beam twice, in 2014 and 2016, and made history by becoming the first gymnast ever to perform a sideways side aerial into an immediate full-twisting layout dismount on beam. Francis, a three-time Pac-12 All-Academic honoree and a NACGC/W Scholastic All-American, graduated in June with a degree in English.
A record total of 517 student-athletes have been nominated, including 231 at the Division I level. The winner will be announced at the annual award ceremony on Oct. 16 in Indianapolis.
