UCLA Wraps Up Day One In Eugene

EUGENE, Ore. – The UCLA track and field team scored some crucial points and advanced athletes on to later in the competition on the first day of the NCAA Championships held at Historic Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon.
The men's shot put highlighted the opening day of the event as the Bruins sported two scorers in the competition. Senior Nicholas Scarvelis capped off his illustrious UCLA career by placing fourth overall with a mark of 66-2.25. Sophomore Braheme Days closely followed in fifth with a throw of 65-8.75. Freshman Dotun Ogundeji placed 20th with a best of 60-10.50.
Senior Lane Werley also closed out a stellar UCLA career by placing 12th in the 10,000m with a time of 29:29.14. Senior Nick Hartle also earned All-American accolades by placing 14th in the 800m with a time of 1:47.74.
Freshman Rai Benjamin in only his third collegiate 400m hurdle race will advance to the finals on Friday by posting the sixth fastest qualifying time of 49.84. That lifetime best time is already the eighth fastest in school history.
In the long jump junior Austin Hazel finished 21st with a leap of 23-7.50.
The women will start competition on Thursday as the 4x100m will start things off for the Bruins at 4:32 p.m. The women's long jump will follow at 6 p.m. while the 200m semis are scheduled for 6:44 p.m.
