Five Bruins Seek National Team Spots

June 09, 2016 | Women's Rowing

The UCLA women's rowing program will have five current student-athletes training with hopes to compete at the 2016 Under-23 World Championships August in Rotterdam, Netherlands, Aug. 20-28.

Representing UCLA this summer hoping to make their respective national teams will be junior Marie Jacquet (France), sophomores Sierra Bronkhorst (Canada) and Alexandra Rusbarsky (United States), and freshmen Kyra Edwards and Saskia Budgett (Great Britain).

Jacquet hopes to return to the Under-23 World Championships after winning a bronze medal in the 4x in 2015 and the 2x in 2014. Bronkhorst represented Canada at the Under-23 World Championships in 2014, finishing ninth in the 2-. Edwards represented Great Britain in the 4x at the 2015 World Championships in which she won a silver medal in the 4x. Budgett competed at the 2014 Junior World Championships, where she finished seventh in the 4-. This summer will mark Rusbarsky's first attempt to make the U.S. national team. All five of these student-athletes played prominent roles in UCLA's varsity eight crew this past season. Jacquet, Bronkhorst and Rusbarsky will enter their third year rowing for UCLA this fall, while Budgett and Edwards will begin their second year with the program.

These five Bruins hope to join UCLA alumna Meaghan Volker in international competition in 2016. Volker raced in the Australian National Team 8+ at the Final Olympic Qualification Regatta in Lucerne, Switzerland, where her crew finished third, just missing qualifying for the 2016 Olympics by one spot.
