Former UCLA standout earns Olympic selection in women's varsity eight
Former UCLA standout rower Meaghan Volker will compete in the Australian women's eight in the upcoming Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Volker and several of her Australian teammates will be making their respective Olympic debuts next month after the rowing crew from Russia was not cleared to compete due to a doping history with several athletes. The Australian Olympic Committee made the selection of athletes official on Friday.
A 2014 graduate from UCLA, Volker was a first-team CRCA All-America selection during her senior season (2014). She was twice honored as a CRCA National Scholar-Athlete selection (2013, 2014) and secured first-team CRCA All-America honors as a senior.
In two seasons with the Bruins, Volker rowed in the varsity eight and greatly helped UCLA improve its national profile. As a junior (2013), the Bruins earned their best-ever finish at NCAA Championships with a ninth-place overall finish. One year later, Volker and her teammates helped the Bruins post a 12th-place finish at NCAA Championships.
Volker arrived at UCLA in 2012 after competing for two seasons at the University of Tasmania in Australia. In addition, she had rowed for the Buckingham Rowing Club.
The Rio Olympics are slated to take place from Aug. 5-21, and the rowing events, specifically, will run from Aug. 6-13.
