Four Bruins Prepare to Shine in Rio

LOS ANGELES โ The UCLA track and field team will be represented in the Rio Olympics this week as Brittany Borman (javelin), Nicholas Scarvelis (shot put), Meb Keflezighi (marathon) and Tori Pena (pole vault) are all scheduled to compete.
Pena will be the first competitor from UCLA as the pole vault prelims begin on Tuesday, Aug. 16 at 5:45 a.m. PT. Pena, who competes for Ireland, is in her second Olympics. While at UCLA, Pena was a two-time All-American in 2010 and her clearance of 14-3.25 ranks third all-time on the UCLA list.
Borman, who is competing for the United States, gets things going for the Bruins in the evening as she will look to advance in the javelin, beginning at 4:35 p.m. PT. Borman attended UCLA in 2009 before transferring to Oklahoma, and went on to win four NCAA titles. She was also a 2012 Olympian and the United State champion in 2013.
On Thursday, Aug. 18, Scarvelis will enter the Olympic shot put ring for the first time at 5:55 a.m. PT. Scarvelis, competing for Greece, was a five-time All-American at UCLA and finished his career ranked fourth all-time on the prestigious UCLA shot put list with a career best mark of 67-7.50.
On Sunday, Aug. 21, Meb will make his fourth Olympic appearance as he gears up for the marathon at 5:30 a.m. PT. Meb, the 2004 Olympic marathon silver medalist and New York and Boston marathon winner, was a 12-time All-American at UCLA and a USATF and UCLA Hall of Fame inductee.
