Freshman Jessie Fleming of the UCLA women's soccer team was voted the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for Aug. 22-28.
Fleming made an impressive collegiate debut on Aug. 28, scoring two goals in the Bruins' matchup against No. 6 Florida. Just nine days removed from winning a bronze medal with Team Canada at the Rio Olympic Games, Fleming wasted no time in making a name for herself at UCLA, scoring the game-tying and the go-ahead goals in the second half. Fleming had just arrived at UCLA two days prior while the team was on the road at Texas A&M but had no trouble acclimating with her new teammates. In addition to her two goals, she also contributed a stunning highlight-reel juke that went viral and led to a penalty kick for the Bruins. She also fed a teammate with a nice give-and-go later in the game, but the shot was saved.
This is Fleming's first UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and of her career.
The UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week is chosen by fans on Twitter via @UCLAAthletics. This week, Fleming beat out men's soccer player Jason Romero, who scored his first Bruin goal 65 seconds into the season for the Bruins in a 1-1 tie vs. Maryland, and volleyball player Taylor Formico, who totaled 47 digs to lead the Bruins to the LMU Invitational title.
