FALCON HEIGHTS, Minn. โ€“ The UCLA cross country team was put through an early season test on Saturday at the prestigious Griak Invitational held on the Les Bolstad Golf Course. The men's squad finished sixth while the women placed seventh.

"Today was a great opener for both the men and women," UCLA cross country coach Forest Braden said. "We need to clean a couple of things up but this was exactly the start we wanted to the season."

Ferdinand Edman paced the Bruins with a top-10 finish. The fifth-year senior crossed the line in eighth place with a time of 25:21.

"Ferdinand showed that he could be the crucial low stick we need but we need to get our fifth through seventh closer to our top four," Braden explained. "Today was a good learning experience throughout."ย

Senior Jonah Diaz was the second finisher for UCLA as he placed 26th overall with a time of 25:40. Redshirt-freshman Colin Burke followed 29th at 25:44 while senior Austin O'Neil was 39th at 25:53 and redshirt-freshman Millen Trujillo rounded out the Bruin top-5 in 66th place with a time of 26:13.

Junior Myles Smith crossed the line in 67th at 26:14 while sophomore Jackson Marshall concluded the top-7 in 82nd place with a time of 26:24.

Also competing for the Bruins was sophomore Cole Smith who placed 92nd with a time of 26:27, junior Richard Ho who ran a 26:31 to place 100th and junior Daniel De La Torre who finished 110th with a 26:41.

The women also posted an impressive top-10 finish as the Bruins placed seventh overall. Sophomore Julia Rizk paced UCLA with a 23rd place showing with a time of 22:22. In her first ever cross country race freshman Claire Markey closely followed in 24th with a 22:22.

"I was really pleased with the efforts from the entire team but specifically Julia and Claire leading our team up front," Braden said. "Julia stepped up big time, went out a little aggressive but hung tough through the last half of the race. Claire has never ran a cross race in her life so the performance, while not unexpected, was very impressive."ย

Junior Emily Scharmann was 46th at 22:41 while Cassie Durgy was 52nd at 22:46 and freshman Sophie Baird capped off the top-5 scorers with a 62nd place finish with a time of 23:00. Junior Roni Yamane was 81st at 23:16 while freshman Jackie Garner rounded out the top-7 in 102nd with a 23:28.

Also competing for the Bruins was sophomore Taylor Taite (166th, 24:09), junior Emily Fieberling (174th, 24:15) and junior Jessica Cushing-Murray (243rd, 24:58).

The Bruins will compete in their closest meet to Westwood next Saturday, Oct. 1. The Mustang Challenge will be held at Central Park in Santa Clarita, Calif.
