Cross Country Stays Local at Mustang Challenge

LOS ANGELES โ The UCLA cross country team will take part in its closest meet to Westwood as the Bruins head to the fifth annual Mustang Challenge, hosted by The Master's University. The meet will be held at Central Park in Santa Clarita.

The men's 8k will start things off at 8 a.m. while the women's 5k will begin at 8:45 a.m. The division I teams that are slated to join UCLA at the meet are Cal State Bakersfield and UC Irvine. There will be numerous division II and NAIA schools also in attendance.

The Bruins have had a lot of success in Central Park as Kelsey Smith posted the 5k course record of 17:01.56 in 2013. Also at that same meet, Sergey Sushchikh set the 8k record with a time of 24:50.11.
According to the USTFCCCA polls both the men and women are off to a great start to the cross country season with the men ranked 27th and the women ranked 29th in the country.

The Bruins had several standout performances at last week's Griak Invitational. On the men's side, fifth-year senior Ferdinand Edman placed eighth with a time of 25:21. On the women's side sophomore Julia Rizk placed 23rd with a time of 22:22 and was followed by a 24th place finish from freshman Claire Markey with a 22:22 in her first ever cross country race.

UCLA will train through the next week to be ready to make the trek to Madison, Wisconsin to compete in the Wisconsin Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 15.
