LAS VEGAS - Headlined by top-seeded Ena Shibahara, the UCLA women's tennis team had three of its four players advance to the second round of singles at the Freeman Memorial Championships on Friday afternoon at UNLV's Fertitta Tennis Complex.
Shibahara, the nation's No. 4 singles player, posted a 6-2, 6-3 win over Duke's Alyssa Smith in her opening round match. Next up is a meeting with Oklahoma State's Aliona Bolsova in Saturday's round of 16. The Bruins' other singles winners on the day were Alaina Miller and Jada Hart. Miller notched a 6-4, 6-7, 6-2 victory over UNLV's En-Pei Huang, while Hart downed Florida's Brooke Austin, 6-4, 6-7, 7-6.
The only other UCLA player in the singles draw, Terri Fleming, fell to third-seeded Jessie Aney of North Carolina, 6-4, 6-3.
One round of doubles was also played on Friday with UCLA going 1-1. Shibahara and Hart, seeded fourth, downed Alexa Graham and Makenna Jones of North Carolina, 6-3. Fleming and Miller lost their first round match, suffering a 6-3 loss to Huang/Carol Yang of UNLV.
