LOS ANGELES - UCLA freshman tennis player Evan Zhu and senior Joseph Di Giulio both won a pair of singles matches on Saturday to advance to Sunday's semifinals at the Sherwood Collegiate Cup in Thousand Oaks, Calif.

Zhu, who recently arrived at UCLA for the Winter Quarter, posted two wins over Stanford players on Saturday. His day began with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Brandon Sutter in the round of 16. He followed that up with another straight-set win, downing Jack Barber, 7-6(5), 6-4 in the quarterfinals. Zhu's opponent in the semifinals will be Baylor's Max Tchoutakian.

In the bottom half of the draw, Di Giulio booked his spot in the semifinals after only having to play one match on Saturday, as his round of 16 opponent, Johannes Schretter of Baylor, withdrew. Di Giulio's lone win on the day came in the form of a 6-3, 6-4 win over Baylor's Bjoern Peterson. Juan Benitez, also from Baylor, awaits Di Giulio in the semifinals.

Both semifinal singles matches are slated to begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Sherwood Country Club.

UCLA also has one team competing in the semifinals of doubles at Sherwood, as Ben Goldberg and Logan Staggs are slated to meet Benitez and Tchoutakian on Sunday. The Bruin duo downed Will Little and Johannes Schretter, 7-5 in the quarterfinals.

National Collegiate Tennis Classic Update
UCLA also has two players, Daniel Gealer and Michael Guzman, competing this weekend at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in Rancho Mirage, Calif. Guzman won two matches on Saturday to reach Sunday's quarterfinals in singles. He downed Boise State's Harvey Shackleton, 6-2, 6-4 in the round of 16. Gealer dropped a tight 6-7, 7-6, 7-5 match to Pepperdine's Gabriel Sydney in the round of 16.
