NEW YORK, N.Y. – The UCLA track team showed the fruits of the offseason workouts in the season opener on Friday at the Armory in New York. The Bruins were impressive, clocking personal bests against a talented field at the Columbia East/West Challenge.

The quick races were showcased on Friday. In the women's 60m highly touted freshman Celera Barnes placed fourth overall with a 7.40 while junior Jessie Maduka clocked a personal best 7.50 to finish eighth. The time by Barnes is the third fastest indoor performance by a Bruin while Maduka improves to the eighth fastest in school history.

In the men's 60m, junior Leon Powell posted a notable season-opening mark by finishing third with a time of 6.72. New York native Rai Benjamin shortened up his usual distance by also posting a 6.72 to place fourth. The 6.72 by Benjamin is the third fastest in UCLA history while Powell nearly hit his PR of 6.68, which ranks second all-time.

Sophomore Pattriana Perry finished sixth in the 60m hurdles with an 8.66 while fellow sophomore Jasmine Stauffacher-Gray was ninth at 8.90. Stauffacher-Gray, a 400m hurdler, posted a best of 8.77 in the prelims in her first career 60m hurdle race.

Junior Misana Viltz blitzed the barriers to win the 60m hurdles with an 8.02. Viltz posted the fastest qualifying time with an 8.07 for an impressive season debut.

In the lone distance competition of the day, UCLA finished fourth in the DMR with a time of 9:42.88.

The final day of competition in the Armory will begin tomorrow with the women's mile at 3 p.m. PT.
