SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – UCLA freshman guard Lonzo Ball has been selected as one of 10 watch list finalists for the 2017 Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award, presented by College of the Holy Cross.
 
Named after Hall of Famer and former Boston Celtic and Holy Cross guard Bob Cousy, the annual honor is now in its 14th year recognizing the top point guards in Division I men's college basketball. A national committee comprised of top college basketball personnel determined the watch list of 20 candidates in October, which has now been narrowed to just 10.
 
Ball, a 6-foot-6 guard from Chino Hills, Calif., currently leads the nation in total assists (176) and is second, nationally, with 8.0 assists per game. Ball has averaged 14.9 points and 5.6 rebounds per game while shooting 53.8 percent from the field and 43.1 percent from three-point range.
 
Ball is the nation's only player who has averaged at least 10.0 points, 7.0 assists and 4.0 rebounds per game. His total of 176 assists is just three shy of tying UCLA's single-season freshman record of 179, set by Pooh Richardson in 1985-86. Ball is 80 assists away from tying the school's single-season record (256, Larry Drew II in 2012-13).
 
Joining Ball on the 10-man midseason list are Joel Berry II (North Carolina), Jalen Brunson (Villanova), De'Aaron Fox (Kentucky), Markelle Fultz (Washington), Frank Mason (Kansas), Monte Morris (Iowa State), Dennis Smith (N.C. State), Melo Trimble (Maryland) and Nigel Williams-Goss (Gonzaga).
 
In March, five finalists will be presented to Bob Cousy and the Hall of Fame's selection committee for the 2017 Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award. The winner of this year's award will be presented at the ESPN College Basketball Awards Show live from The Novo by Microsoft in downtown Los Angeles on Friday, April 7.
