LOS ANGELES – Griffin Canning tied a career-high with 12 strikeouts for the second consecutive start and threw 8.0 shutout innings as the UCLA baseball team scored the game-winning run in the ninth inning to claim a 1-0 victory over Michigan in a pitcher's duel on Friday from Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Canning posted his second 12-strikeout performance of the season as he totaled the same number last Friday against Gonzaga. He finished the night scattering three hits and did not allow a run in 8.0 innings.

With the game scoreless in the ninth inning, Chase Strumpf led off the inning with a double to left-center field. Brett Stephens then laid down a sacrifice bunt to move pinch runner Jake Hirabayashi to third base but an errant throw by the pitcher got passed the third baseman and brought home the game's only run.

Brian Gadsby (2-2) earned the win after coming in with two runners on and one out in the eighth inning and held the Wolverines off the scoreboard.

Michigan's starter Oliver Jaskie tossed 6.0 shutout innings allowing three hits with six strikeouts. Tommy Henry (1-1) suffered the loss allowing two hits in 2.0 innings out of the bullpen. The loss snaps a five-game winning streak for the Wolverines.

The Bruins finished the game with one run on five hits and no errors, while Michigan ended the game with no runs on three hits and one error.

UCLA returns to Jackie Robinson Stadium on Saturday to host San Diego for the second game of the Dodger Stadium College Baseball Classic with first pitch set for 2 p.m. (PT).
