SAN FRANCISCO - UCLA junior Griffin Canning has been named Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week for the first time this season, announced the Pac-12 Conference office on Monday. It is the second time he has won the award in his career.

Canning, a right-handed pitcher from Coto de Caza, Calif., threw a complete-game shutout and tied a career-high with 12 strikeouts on Thursday at No. 18 Stanford. He scattered just four hits in his 9.0 innings of work and did not allow a walk.

It marked his first complete game shutout since April 15, 2016 at Washington and his first complete game since his final start of the 2016 season at Oregon State. Canning has now recorded five complete games in his career and has tied his career-high of 12 strikeouts for the third time this season.

Canning has totaled 78 strikeouts in 2017, good for 10th in the NCAA and second in the Pac-12. Earlier this season he became the 22nd pitcher in UCLA history to surpass 200 career strikeouts and currently ranks 15th on the program's career strikeout list.

Last week, Canning was named to the Golden Spikes Award Midseason watch list as one of the top 40 amateur players in the country at the college ranks.

UCLA returns home this week to face No. 12 Long Beach State on Tuesday at 6 p.m. (PT) before hosting top-ranked Oregon State for a three-game weekend series starting on Friday at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
