UCLA freshman middle blocker Daenan Gyimah was named on Wednesday to the Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. Freshman All-American Team as selected by a nationwide voting committee of college coaches and men's volleyball media.
Gyimah has placed among the nation's leaders this season in hitting percentage and was ranked third in the MPSF with a .494 mark. His .800 hitting percentage in a match this season against Long Beach State was the second-highest in the nation by a player with at least 15 hitting attempts in a three-set contest. Gyimah had just one error in 15 swings to go with a team-best 13 kills versus the 49ers. He recorded multiple blocks in 14 of the 19 matches he played in this season and led the team in block assists in seven matches. Three times he topped the team in both kills and block assists.
The Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. Freshmen All-American Team honors the top NCAA Division I-II men's volleyball freshmen players from the regular season. This is the fourth year Off the Block and Springbak, Inc. have presented the national honor, and it remains the only Freshmen All-American Team presented in college men's volleyball. Players eligible for the Off the Block/Springbak, Inc. Freshmen All-American Team had to be on an active roster of a NCAA Division I-II men's volleyball team and be listed as a freshman or redshirt freshman. A player earning a spot on the Freshmen All-American Team had to be among the top 10 vote-getters and appear on at least one-third of all the fully submitted voting ballots. A tie in the voting resulted in an additional player making the Freshmen All-American Team this year. The voting committee for the Freshmen All-American Team was comprised of more than 20 college men's volleyball head coaches and volleyball reporters from around the nation.
