This postseason, the Bruins and freshman Clare Legaspi honored a Marine Corps veteran and UCLA alum, Major Brian Keith Sebade, by carrying his name on her bag through the Women's Golf Coaches Association and the Folds of Honor program.

Sebade, a proud Marine who served his country in the Western Pacific, Somalia and the Persian Gulf, attended UCLA and completed his collegiate degree at Long Beach State. In addition, his son also currently attends UCLA. Brian passed away in 2013 after a hard-fought battle with ALS.

"A few years ago, the WGCA wanted to do something to honor service people and be socially conscious of the things that were going on," head coach Carrie Forsyth said. "We decided that we wanted to honor a veteran with ties to UCLA, and doing so by having his name on one of our player's bags."

Forsyth and associate coach Alicia Um Holmes wanted to decide who most deserved the honor of carrying the bag with Sebade's name and rank during the postseason.

"We read the letter to the team that his wife wrote, and it talked about his fighting spirit and never-quit attitude, and that's how we ended up deciding on Clare," Forsyth said. "Her traits out on the golf course most identified with those of Brian."

In the letter, it mentioned Brian's "enthusiastic zeal to please, to succeed, to prosper and to live, and that his attitude towards life was contagious."

"I was honored that my coaches and teammates felt that way about me and chose to give this honor," Legaspi said. "My dad is a retired Air Force pilot in the Philippines and my grandfather is a World War II veteran. My dad was honored too that I was able to carry this bag, just like how I felt."
