On Sunday night, eight Bruins were included in the first induction class for the Southern California Indoor Volleyball Association Hall of Fame (SCIVBHOF). Headlining the list are Al Scates, who coached the UCLA men's volleyball team to an NCAA record 19 titles and longtime (1965-2010) Bruin women's head coach Andy Banachowski. Coach Banachowski was part of two UCLA USVBA titles in 1965 and 1967 as a player under Scates, earning All-America honors in '67 and '68. He then worked as an assistant coach to Scates from 1972-77 when the Bruin men won three more NCAA titles. Banachowski went on to capture six national championships (three NCAA titles) as the UCLA women's head volleyball coach. Scates also earned All-America honors while a player at UCLA in the 1960's. Both have previously been enshrined at the International Volleyball Hall of Fame.
Also on the induction list was Karch Kiraly, the current USA Women's Olympic Coach, who won three NCAA titles (1979, 1981, 1982) as a player at UCLA and then led the USA to its first two Olympic Indoor Gold Medals in 1984 and 1988. He was selected to All-America teams in 1979, '80, '81 and '82. Kiraly was inducted into the International Volleyball Hall of Fame in 2001.
Sinjin Smith served as captain and was the NCAA MVP of UCLA's 1979 title team that was the first unbeaten team in NCAA history. He was also an All-American in 1978 and was inducted into the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame in 1991 and the International Volleyball Hall of Fame in 2003. He joined the U.S. National Team in 1979 and then went on to serve on the Board of Directors of USA Volleyball. In 1983 and 1984, he was named a USA Volleyball All-American.
The class also includes 1988 Olympic Gold Medalists middle blocker Doug Partie and setter Ricci Luyties. The pair teamed up on UCLA teams which won 126 of 133 collegiate matches, 83 straight home matches and four straight NCAA titles in 1981, 1982, 1983 and 1984. Partie earned All-America honors in 1982, '83 and '84, while Luyties was named to the NCAA All-America squad in 1983 and 1984.
Also honored were former Bruin USVBA National Champions and All-Americans from the 1950s, Mike O'Hara and Rolf Engen. O'Hara won 15 USVBA Championships and was a member of the U.S.'s first Olympic team which competed at the Tokyo Games in 1964. Engen earned All-America honors while winning two National Championships at UCLA in the early 1950's. He was a 10-time USVBA All-American and served as the Commissioner of Volleyball at the 1984 Olympic Games held in Los Angeles. Both are members of the International Volleyball Hall of Fame.
