Senior Scott Quessenberry and junior Austin Roberts were named on Tuesday to the preseason watch lists for the Rimington Trophy and John Mackey Award, respectively. The Rimington Award is presented annually to the most outstanding center in college football. The John Mackey Award is given to the most outstanding collegiate tight end.
Quessenberry, who started at center all 12 games last season, earned first-team All-Pac-12 Conference honors in a vote of the league coaches. He has 31 career starts, the most of any offensive player returning to the UCLA team and tied for the most career starts on the team.
Roberts saw action in 11 games last season and hauled in a total of 15 passes for 261 yards and an average of 17.4 yards per catch, highest on the team by a player with at least 10 catches. He registered a season-high five receptions in the contest at Texas A&M and recorded his first career 100-yard game, with three catches for 106 yards, against Arizona State.
The Rimington Trophy committee uses three prestigious All-America teams to determine a winner – Walter Camp Foundation, Sporting News, Football Writers Association of America. The center with the most first team votes will be declared the winner and will be recognized at the Rimington Trophy presentation at the Rococo Theatre in Lincoln, Nebraska on Saturday, January 13, 2018. NFL Hall of Fame member John Mackey is considered to be the best to have played the tight end position. Mackey was a role model on and off the field as demonstrated by his Super Bowl Championship, his commitment to community and his place in history as the first President of the NFL Players Association.
