Former UCLA standout guard Lonzo Ball of the Los Angeles Lakers has been named Most Valuable Player of the MGM Resorts NBA Summer League 2017, as announced by the league on Monday evening.
 
Ball averaged 16.3 points and a league-best 9.3 assists, along with 7.5 rebounds and 2.5 steals per game, becoming the first Laker to secure NBA Summer League MVP honors. He tallied a pair of triple-doubles, including the first in Las Vegas since 2008, when he had 11 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists in an 86-81 loss to the Boston Celtics on July 8.
 
Ball, a consensus All-America selection for the Bruins as a freshman in 2016-17, was selected No. 2 overall by the Los Angeles Lakers in the NBA Draft on Thursday, June 22. He helped the Lakers' summer league team capture the Las Vegas Summer League title with a 6-2 overall record (he did not play in the championship game due to a calf strain). Ball teamed with former UCLA forward Travis Wear on the Lakers' summer league squad. Wear averaged 7.9 points and 3.9 rebounds in 16.9 minutes per game for the Lakers (through eight contests).
 
This year's other first-team All-NBA Summer League selections include John Collins (Atlanta Hawks), Josh Jackson (Phoenix Suns), Dennis Smith Jr. (Dallas Mavericks) and Caleb Swanigan (Portland Trail Blazers). The second-team selections were Cheick Diallo (New Orleans Pelicans), Bryn Forbes (San Antonio Spurs), Kyle Kuzma (L.A. Lakers), Wayne Selden Jr. (Memphis Grizzlies) and Jayson Tatum (Boston Celtics).
 
As a freshman at UCLA last season, Ball averaged 14.6 points, 6.0 rebounds and a nation-leading 7.6 assists per game. He scored in double figures in 31 of 36 games for UCLA and established the school's single-season assists record (274). In addition, he was one of five finalists for the 2017 John R. Wooden Award and secured first-team All-Pac-12 acclaim. Ball was named National Freshman of the Year by nearly every national publication.
 
Ball and Wear were two of 10 former UCLA players to compete in the NBA Summer League. Three of Ball's teammates from the 2016-17 UCLA squad – Bryce Alford (Golden State Warriors), Isaac Hamilton (Indiana Pacers) and TJ Leaf (Indiana) – participated in the summer league.
 
Also representing UCLA in the NBA Summer League were Jordan Adams (Portland Trail Blazers), Noah Allen (Golden State), Jonah Bolden (Philadelphia 76ers), Larry Drew II (Philadelphia) and Kevon Looney (Golden State).
