TUCSON, Ariz. - UCLA baseball's incoming freshman class has been ranked nationally at No. 18 by Collegiate Baseball, announced the national publication this week. It marks the 11th time in 13 years the Bruins have earned a top-20 ranking from Collegiate Baseball.
The Bruins are one of seven Pac-12 programs to be ranked in the top-40 and they come in second in the conference as Arizona State earned the No. 4 ranking. USC came in at No. 29, followed by Arizona at No. 31, Stanford at No. 32, Oregon at No. 35 and Oregon State at No. 36. The only other California schools to be tabbed in the top-40 were UC Santa Barbara at No. 19, Cal State Fullerton at No. 27, San Diego State at No. 33, UC Riverside at No. 34 and CSUN at No. 40.
Earlier this month, UCLA's recruting class was tabbed No. 16 by Baseball America. It marks the fourth-straight season the Bruins earned a top-25 ranking from Baseball America.
This year's incoming class totals eight players and includes three who were selected in the 2017 Major League Baseball amateur draft as outfielder Garrett Mitchell (Orange, Calif.), left-handed pitcher Sam Glick (El Toro, Calif.) and right-handed pitcher Chase Farrell (Valencia, Calif.) were each selected on the final day of the draft.
Over the summer, right-handed pitcher Holden Powell (Visalia, Calif.) was named to the All-West Coast League second team, while right-handed pitcher Zach Pettway (Long Beach, Calif.) and infielder Kevin Kendall (La Mirada, Calif.) each earned honorable mention selections.
The class also includes right-handed pitcher Michael Townsend (Los Alamitos, Calif.) and infielder RJ Teijeiro (Foster City, Calif.).
