SANTA BARBARA -- The No. 3 UCLA Bruins completed a 4-0 weekend at the UC Santa Barbara Winter Invitational Sunday with two more victories over ranked opponents. In their first match of the day, the Bruins defeated No. 8 Michigan, 12-5, and then ended their trip with a 17-2 win over No. 11 UC San Diego.
The Bruins' Alys Williams netted three goals in each contest for a team-high six on the day. Maddie Musselman scored five of her own, all in the second game.
Kodi Hill got scoring started at 7:34 of the first frame in the morning match. Williams bookended Hill's score in the final seconds with her second of the frame to push the UCLA (6-0) lead to 4-1.
The Bruin defense was on display in the second quarter, as it shut out the Wolverine offensive attack heading into the break. Rachel Fattal and Lizette Rozeboom each scored before Mackenzie Barr gave UCLA its second buzzer-beating goal to extend the Bruin halftime advantage to 7-1.
Fattal scored again to begin the third, but the Michigan (2-2) offense came alive to net three scores in the quarter. The Wolverines' Julia Sellers posted two of the goals and would finish with a hat trick on the game. Williams finished her own three-goal effort in the quarter, which ended with a 9-4 Bruin advantage. Barr added two goals in the final frame to match Williams with three scores and cap the 12-5 victory.
Seven first-quarter goals were a sign of things to come in the afternoon contest, as Musselman scored her first two of the day and Williams contributed a pair of her own. Fattal, Alexis Angermund and Aubrie Monahan also scored, while UCSD (2-2) was held without a goal in the frame.
Musselman quickly posted her third goal in the second quarter, and was soon accompanied on the score sheet by Alexia Tielmann and Devin Grab to put the UCLA halftime advantage at 10-1.
The second half was much of the same, as Musselman completed her five-goal outburst and Rozeboom scored three times to give the attacker her second hat trick in as many days. The UCLA defense held the Tritons to their second scoreless frame of the day to close the match and secure a 17-2 victory.
While Carlee Kapana recorded a majority of the time in the cage, Hannah Storum got her first action of the season during the second half of the afternoon contest.
The schedule provides the Bruins a week off to prepare for the No. 13 Long Beach State 49ers, who they will visit Friday, Feb. 3 (6:00 p.m.).
