January 27, 2017 | Men's Basketball
Former UCLA standout players Russell Westbrook and Kevin Love have each been selected to compete in the 2017 NBA All-Star Game, scheduled to take place Feb. 19 at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans.
Westbrook has earned his sixth selection to the NBA All-Star Game, the second-most number of appearances for any former UCLA player. Love has been selected to NBA All-Star Game for the fourth time in his career. Both Westbrook and Love are currently in their ninth NBA seasons.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who played for UCLA's varsity team from 1967-69, totaled 19 NBA All-Star Game appearances during a career that spanned from 1969-70 through 1988-89. Three former UCLA standouts – Gail Goodrich, Marques Johnson and Reggie Miller – each secured five trips to the NBA All-Star Game.
Westbrook has averaged career highs this season in points (31.0 ppg) and rebounds (10.6) while also registering 10.2 assists per game for the Oklahoma City Thunder. Through Thursday, Jan. 26, Westbrook had tallied 23 triple-doubles through 47 games. The NBA's single-season record for most triple-doubles is 41, set by Oscar Robertson in 1961-62.
Westbrook starred at UCLA in 2006-07 and 2007-08, helping the Bruins advance to the NCAA Tournament's Final Four each season.
Love has averaged 20.5 points and 11.0 rebounds for the Cleveland Cavaliers this season. A freshman at UCLA during the 2007-08 season, Love has shot 42.9 percent from the field and 37.6 percent from three-point range for Cleveland this year.
Love teamed with Westbrook during his one collegiate season, leading the Bruins to a 35-4 overall record and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament's Final Four in March 2008.
In all, UCLA has seen 17 of its former players compete in the NBA's All-Star Game.
