January 30, 2017 | Baseball
LOS ANGELES - UCLA right-handed pitcher Griffin Canning was named a Preseason All-America third team selection by Baseball America, as voted by a selection of scouts and crosscheckers from throughout professional baseball, on Monday.
Canning, a junior from Coto de Caza, Calif., finished last season with a 5-8 record and a 3.70 ERA. He threw a team-best 109.1 innings with 95 strikeouts, including 61 punch outs during Pac-12 play, en route to earning All-Pac-12 Honorable Mention. Canning earned Freshman All-American accolades in 2015 after posting a 7-1 record with a 2.97 ERA and 66 strikeouts over 63.2 innings pitched.
Earlier this winter, Canning was named a Top 100 prospect by Baseball America (No. 16), Perfect Game (No. 28), D1Baseball (No. 31) and MLB.com (No. 39).
Baseball America annually polls major league organizations' scouting departments to vote on the team and make their selections based on performance, talent and professional potential. This year 17 of the 30 teams participated, giving a solid cross-section of how scouts view the college talent heading into the 2017 season. The full list of Preseason All-Americans can be found here.
