No. 1 UCLA Shuts Out Arizona State, 3-0
October 05, 2017 | Women's Soccer
Tempe, Ariz. - Hailie Mace scored two goals for the second consecutive game, and Anika Rodriguez added another goal to lead top-ranked UCLA to a 3-0 win at Arizona State. The victory was UCLA head coach Amanda Cromwell's 300th career victory.
ASU (4-6-2, 1-2-1 in the Pac-12) had the game's first three shots and forced Teagan Micah into two saves in the first seven minutes of the game, but it was UCLA who struck first, with Mace netting her 10th of the year in the 19th minute with a shot from the top of the box.
The Bruins (11-0-1, 4-0-0) took the 1-0 lead into halftime and wasted little time in doubling their lead. After an ASU handball in the box was called, Mace lined up for the penalty kick and coolly buried it past goalkeeper Megan Delaney, who had just entered the game two minutes earlier. The goal gave Mace 11 for the year and five in her last three games.
In the blink of an eye, Rodriguez made it 3-0, scoring 37 seconds later in the 54th minute with her third goal of the year. The Bruins gained possession on a turnover at midfield and got a clean cross to Rodriguez on the left side. Her shot was headed to the far post but was deflected at the last second by a Sun Devil defender, bounced off the goalkeeper and landed right at her feet. Rodriguez's second shot found the back of the net for the final score of the match.
The Bruins outshot the Sun Devils, 19-7. Micah earned her fifth shutout of the year, making four saves, while ASU's Delaney and Nikki Panas had three saves each.
UCLA will next face Arizona on Sunday, Oct. 8 at 12pm in Tucson.
