MVB Downed by CSUN in Five Sets

No. 5-ranked UCLA fell in five sets on Wednesday night to No. 14-ranked CSUN in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation contest played in Pauley Pavilion.  Scores of the match were 25-20, 21-25, 25-20, 23-25, 9-15 in favor of the Matadors. UCLA was led by sophomore Dylan Missry's career-high 21 kills. However, CSUN outhit the Bruins .263 to .199 and won the battle of the block 12.5 to 10.5 for UCLA. The Bruins are now 10-5 overall and 7-4 in MPSF play. Next up for UCLA is a Saturday date against No. 2 Long Beach State at 4 p.m. in the John Wooden Center.

Both teams used their serve to big advantage throughout the match. In set five, CSUN stormed out to a 0-6 lead. UCLA cut the deficit to 2-8 heading to the court change. Michael Fisher helped serve the Bruins back into set and trigger a run which closed the margin to 5-9. CSUN managed to capture  the next two points to regain the momentum. The  gap was 7-12 after a couple of Missry kills but that was as close as the Bruins would come before going down 9-15. UCLA hit -.071 for the set to a .455 percentage for the visitors.

Set one mirrored the final set as CSUN served its way out to a 0-6 lead. After a fourth ace of the early going, CSUN held a 1-10 lead. The Bruins rallied behind the serve of senior Mitch Stahl, who recorded an ace for the 10th straight match, and shrunk the edge to 9-11. Micah Ma'a registered three kills during the Bruin run. Daenan Gyimah evened the score up at 12-all with a kill. The score was then tied at points 17, 18 and 19. UCLA went up 21-19 after a Ma'a ace and led 23-20 after an ace by JT Hatch and then took home the set on another Hatch service for a 25-20 win.

In set two, CSUN broke up a close early battle with a couple of runs for leads of 7-10 and 11-15. UCLA cut it to 17-18 after Oliver Martin entered the game and added a kill. After the score was even at 20-all, the Matadors ran off the next four points and took a 21-25 decision after a Bruin service error. UCLA hit .179 for the set.

In set three, UCLA broke away to take a 10-5 lead on a kill by Eric Sprague, who entered the contest after an injury to Mitch Stahl, CSUN came back to within two points on several occasions, the last being 15-17, before UCLA pulled off a 25-20 win on a block by Martin and Hagen Smith.

In set four, CSUN opened up a 7-10 edge. UCLA fought back to tie the score at 12-all and then was even at 14, 15, 16 and 17. The Matadors then tallied the next three points. UCLA cut the gap to 20-21, after a kill by Ma'a, and then leveled the score at 22 after two straight swings by Hatch. A CSUN block and a Bruin error gave the visitors a 22-24 lead. Hatch added another kill to save one set point, but CSUN answered for a 23-25 win.

Ma'a tied his season-high with 8 kills on the night. He added five aces and matched his season high with 9 digs. Hatch finished with 12 kills, a couple of aces and 7 digs. Jackson Bantle totaled three digs and Davis Gillett had four digs. Martin recorded five kills and Sprague had a season-best of four blocks.
