UCLA Tops Gonzaga, 5-4, for Series Win

LOS ANGELES โ Jake Pries recorded three hits including a solo home run, while the Bruins bullpen threw 5.0 shutout innings as the UCLA baseball team earned a 5-4 win on Sunday to clinch the weekend series over Gonzaga on Sunday from Jackie Robinson Stadium.
The Bruins improved to 4-2 on the season and have won both weekend series this season.
Gonzaga scored first with a pair of runs in the top of the first inning as Gunnar Schubert and Jake Vieth hit back-to-back RBI singles.
The Bruins quickly responded with a four-run second inning. Pries led off the inning with a single and came around to score on a throwing error by the third baseman. Daniel Rosica would plate Chase Strumpf from third base with a bunt single to the right side of the infield, followed by a Brett Stephens RBI-single to right field. Sean Bouchard capped off the inning with a sacrifice fly to center field to score Daniel Amaral and make the score 4-2.
The Zags added one run in the third inning off Vieth's second RBI of the game, but Pries got the run back with a solo home run in the bottom half of the inning, a line drive over the left-field fence for his first of the season to make the score 5-3.
After Gonzaga's Tyler Frost hit a solo home run to make the score 5-4 in the fourth inning, the Zags would not score again as the UCLA bullpen combined to throw 5.0 shutout innings and scattered just two hits. Nick Scheidler (1-0) earned his first career winning tossing 1.2 innings in relief and Brian Gadsby (1) tallied his first save of the season with a clean ninth-inning performance.
Gonzaga's Casey Legumina (0-1) suffered the loss in his collegiate debut allowing five runs in 6.0 innings on seven hits and two walks.
UCLA will play its first road game of the season on Tuesday when the Bruins travel to Cal State Northridge with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m. (PT).
