Men's Water Polo Earns 13 Academic Honors

The UCLA Bruins earned a total of 13 academic awards after the conclusion of the 2016 campaign.

LOS ANGELES -- Six Bruins captured ACWPC All-Academic accolades, as announced by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches (ACWPC) and seven earned MPSF All-Academic accolades.
The sixย players that were honored by the ACWPC consistedย ofย senior Patrick Woespe,ย junior James Robinson, sophomore Austin Rone;ย redshirt sophomore Alex Wolf and freshmen James Vlachonassios andย Evan Feller.
Student-athletes eligible for the ACWPC All-Academic award must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher. Athlete merit levels include "excellent" (3.2 to 3.4), "superior" 3.41 to 3.7 and "outstanding" 3.71 to 4.0.
Woepse, a center from Tustin, Calif. (Mater Dei HS), earned "superior" honors. He played in 19ย games on the year, making four starts and scoring 12 goals while finishing second on the team in exclusions drawn with 24. His six penalty shots drawn was second on the team.
Robinson, an attacker from Palos Verdes, Calif. (Palos Verdesย HS), earned "excellent" honors. This season he played in 18 games making one start while scoringย 12ย goals and tallyingย 16 assists, sevenย steals and four field blocks.
Rone, an attacker from Coronado, Calif. (Cathedral Catholic HS), also earned "excellent" honors for the second straight season. This yearย he played in 18 games, starting three times, while scoring 16ย goals and registering 15 assists and 11 steals. He also added five field blocks, won five sprints and drew fiveย exclusions.
Wolf, a goalkeeperย from Huntington Beach, Calif. (Huntington Beach HS), earned "superior" honors. He redshirted the 2016 season.Vlachonassios, an attacker from Huntington Beach, Calif. (Huntington Beach HS), earned "excellent"ย honors. This year he played in 25 games making 10 starts as a true freshman. He scored 10 goals and registered 16 assists, nine steals andย five field blocks.
Feller, an attacker from Palos Verdes Estates, Calif. (Palos Verdes HS), earned "outstanding" honors. He redshirted the 2016 season.
To make the MPSF All-Academic team, the student-athlete must have completed one academic year at the institution, have at least a 3.0 grade point average and have played in 50 percent of the team's games in 2016.
Robinson, Rone and Woepse each also earned MPSF All-Academic honors in 2016. The other four Bruins to earn MPSF All-Academic accolades included senior Garrett Danner, junior Matt Farmer, junior Jack Grover and senior Alec Zwaneveld.
Danner, a goalkeeperย from Coto de Caza, Calif. (El Toroย HS), earned All-Academic honors for the second straight year. Dannerย completed his UCLA career atop the leaders in saves (932) and set the all-time single-season record with 278 in 2015.
Farmer, aย center from La Grange, Ill.ย (Fenwickย HS), earned All-Academic honors for the first time in his career. This year he played in 27 games making eight starts, scoring 21 goals. He also registered five steals andย five field blocks and led UCLA in exclusions drawn with 39 and in penalty shots earned with eight.
Grover, an attacker from Pasadena, Calif. (Loyolaย HS), earned All-Academic honors for the first time in his career. He played in 25 games making 13 starts on the year. He scored 16 goals and tallied 22 assists, 12 steals and nine field blocks.
Zwaneveld, aย center from La Cañada, Calif.ย (Harvard-Westlake), earned All-Academic honors for the third straight year. This seasonย he played in 23ย games making fiveย starts, scoring 16 goals. He also registered 11ย steals and drew 20 exclusions.
