March 11, 2017 | Baseball
AUSTIN, Texas โ Moises Ceja threw 5.0 shutout innings in relief as the UCLA baseball team fell to Texas, 5-2, on a rainy Saturday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
Texas scored four runs in the first inning that proved to be the difference in the game. Kacy Clemens and Austin Todd began the scoring with consecutive RBI-doubles, followed two batters later by Ryan Reynolds hitting his own double to score a run and David Hamilton bringing in the fourth run of the inning with a sacrifice fly.
The Bruins scored their first run in the bottom of the third inning as Ryan Kreidler came home on a wild pitch with the bases loaded. The Longhorns pushed its lead back to a four-run advantage in the bottom half of the inning with a Reynolds solo home run just inside the left-field foul pole.
UCLA added one more run in the fourth inning as Michael Toglia and Brett Stephens collected back-to-back singles and Toglia would later score on a throwing error by the catcher to make the score 5-2.
Texas starter Morgan Cooper (2-0) threw 5.0 innings with 10 strikeouts and allowed two runs. He is the first opposing pitcher to strikeout double-digit UCLA batters since Zac Gallen on Feb. 19, 2016.
UCLA starter Nick Scheidler (1-1) suffered the loss and threw 2.2 innings allowing five runs on six hits with one strikeout. Moises Ceja set a career-high with his 5.0 innings of scoreless work out of the bullpen and allowed just two hits.
The Bruins had one of their best scoring opportunities in the seventh inning with the bases loaded and one out but Texas' Chase Shugart recorded back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat.
UCLA ended the game with two runs on two hits and no errors, while the Longhorns finished the five runs on eight hits and one error.
The Bruins will play the series finale with the Longhorns on Sunday starting at 11 a.m. PT from UFCU Disch-Falk Field. The game will be televised on the Longhorn Network.
