LOS ANGELES โ Kyle Cuellar finished 3-for-3 and drove in three runs as the UCLA baseball dropped a midweek contest to UC Irvine, 5-3, on Tuesday from Jackie Robinson Stadium.
UC Irvine jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the top of the sixth with a three-run inning highlighted by Evan Cassolato bringing home a pair of runs with a single through the right side.
Down by three runs in the seventh inning, Cuellar would plate a pair of runs for the Bruins to make the score 4-3 as he split the left-field gap for a double to bring home Will McInerny and Brett Stephens.
UCI added a run in the ninth inning for its final run when Alex Guenette hit a single through the right side to bring home Mikey Duarte and make the score 5-3.
The Anteaters score the first run of the game in the first inning but UCLA tied the game at 1-1 on a Cuellar RBI-single through the left-side with the infield in to plate Daniel Amaral who hit a single up the middle for the team's first base hit.
Ryan Johnston (2-0) earned the win for UCI tossing 1.2 scoreless innings in relief while Calvin Faucher recorded his seventh save of the season after collecting the final five outs of the game with three strikeouts.
Nick Scheidler (1-2) suffered the loss for UCLA allowing one run in 0.2 innings out of the bullpen. Starter Justin Hooper went 2.0 innings and allowed one run for the no-decision.
UCLA returns to Jackie Robinson Stadium this weekend when it opens Pac-12 play with a three-game series against College World Series runner-up Arizona. Friday and Sunday's games against the Wildcats will be televised on the Pac-12 Network.
