MVB Wins Fourth Straight

No. 6 UCLA won its fourth straight match in a three-set decision over Sacred Heart on Friday night in the Wooden Center. Scores of the contest were 25-15, 25-19, 25-15. Sophomore Dylan Missry led a balanced UCLA attack with 10 kills and hit .625. The Bruins outhit the Pioneers as a team .380 to .016 in the match. Next up is a non-league encounter on Saturday night against Concordia, Irvine, in the Wooden Center, at 7 p.m. UCLA is now 14-7 on the season. Sacred Heart falls to 12-4 on the year.
In the opening set, UCLA found some separation and took an 8-6 lead on a kill by Jake Arnitz and due to the serve of Daenan Gyimah. Mitch Stahl, Christian Hessenauer and Arnitz then teamed up on a block for a 9-7 lead. Hessenauer's ace made it 12-9. A couple of mini-runs later, the Bruins took a 21-13 edge after another Anitz blast. Missry provided the deciding spike in a 25-15 win. UCLA hit .588 for the set with Hessenauer totaling four kills.
Set two was tied at each point up to 11-all. The Bruinsย grabbed the momentum behind the strong serve of senior setter Hagen Smith to score four straight for a 15-11 lead. Kills by Arnitz and Gyimah extended the margin to 20-15. A Missry kill made it 24-19 and the Bruins took the set after a service error.
UCLA moved to a 3-1 edge in set three only to see the Pioneers come back to even it up at 5-all. JT Hatch came off the bench to jump start the attack with a kill for a 9-7 UCLA lead. A block and a kill by Gyimah made it 11-7. Sacred Heart closed to 14-12 before the Bruins rattled off six straight points, the last coming on a block by Stahl and Hatch. Kills by Hatch, who had six in the set, and Gymiah ended the match.
Missry finished the match with three aces and five digs. Hessenauer had nine kills and a season-high three block assists. Stahl (.500) totaled six kills to go with three block assists and tallied an ace in his 13th straight match. Arnitz (.556) and Gyimah registered five kills each. Smith had 32 set assists, an ace and four digs. Davis Gillett recorded six digs. The Bruins out served the Pioneers, 6 to 2, and won the blocking battle by a count of 6.5 to 4.0.
