UCLA Falls Short Against Baylor, 4-3

WACO, Texas -- The No. 21 UCLA women's tennis went the distance in its road match versus No. 13 Baylor, but came up just short at Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center, 4-3. The Bears clinched the victory after it captured a third-set tiebreaker on Court 2.
The Bruins picked up the doubles point after a shuffling of lineups in their final non-conference tilt of the dual-match season. On Court 3, Ena Shibahara and Kristin Wiley defeated Baylor's team of Angie Shakhraichuk and Jessica Hinkjosa, 6-3. Then, on Court 1, the UCLA pair of Terri Fleming and Jada Hart handled the Bears' Elizabeth Profit and Theresa Van Zyl, 6-2, to send the Bruins to singles play with a 1-0 lead.
UCLA (6-4) and Baylor (10-2) traded the first two points of singles action, as Hinojosa defeated Wiley, 6-0, 6-4, and Gabby Andrews answered with a 6-4, 6-3 decision over Shakhraichuk. On Court 3, No. 105 Rhiann Newborn of Baylor topped Jada Hart, 7-6, 6-2, to even the overall score at 2-2. Van Zyl gave the Bears their first lead of the afternoon, thanks to her 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win over Alaina Miller, but that advantage was short-lived.
No. 2 Shibahara needed a second-set tiebreaker against No. 14 Blair Shankle on the top court, as she secured a 7-5, 7-6 (3) win to keep the Bruins alive. Then, on Court 2, Fleming notched a win in the first set, but could not hold off the Bears' Profit, who clinched the victory with a 3-6, 7-6, 7-6 (2) win.
The Bruins will return home Friday, March 10 to open Pac-12 play versus No. 16 Stanford (1:30 p.m.). It will be the first of a back-to-back for UCLA, which will receive a visit from No. 7 California a day later.
