UCLA Hits Past Arizona State for Series Win, 17-4

TEMPE, Ariz. โ Chase Strumpf recorded seven RBIs on three hits, while Jon Olsen tossed 6.2 innings and recorded four strikeouts as the UCLA baseball team defeated Arizona State, 17-4, to earn the series win on Sunday afternoon from Phoenix Municipal Stadium. The Bruins win their first road series of the season and improve to 6-3 in Pac-12 play.
Strumpf becomes the first UCLA player to drive in seven or more runs in a game since Bill Scott drove in eight on April 30, 2000 at Washington State.
The Bruins put up five runs to begin the game in the top of the first inning. Sean Bouchard hit a RBI-double to right field to plate Daniel Amaral to begin the frame followed by a bases loaded walk by Nick Kern made the score 2-0. Strumpf would then hit a bases-loaded double in the left-center field gap to clear the bases for the five-run lead.
UCLA pushed its lead to 9-1 in the fourth inning with a three-run inning highlighted by a Jeremy Ydens two-run home run over the left field wall. The Bruins extended its lead in the fifth inning with five runs as Michael Toglia, Nick Kern, Ryan Kreidler and Strumpf each recorded RBI-singles.
Olsen (2-1) earned his second straight win as he tossed 6.2 innings allowing two runs on three hits with four strikeouts. ASU's Reagan Todd (1-3) suffered the loss allowing six runs, five earned, on four hits with two walks in 1.1 innings of work.
UCLA finished the game with 17 runs on 15 hits with one error, while ASU ended the day with four runs on seven hits and one error.
The Bruins will conclude a four-game road swing on Tuesday as they face San Diego State at 6 p.m. (PT) from Lake Elsinore Diamond in Lake Elsinore, Calif. before returning to Jackie Robinson Stadium on Friday to begin a three-game conference series with Washington.
