UCLA Drops Series Opener to No. 1 Oregon State in Extras

LOS ANGELES – Griffin Canning struck out 10 batters in 7.0 innings, while Nick Kern hit a two-run home run in the ninth inning as the UCLA baseball team dropped the series opener to No. 1 Oregon State, 4-2, in 10 innings on Friday from Jackie Robinson Stadium.
With two outs in the ninth inning and trailing 2-0, UCLA would tie the game as pinch hitter Nick Kern hit a two-run home run deep to left field to score Michael Toglia, who hit a triple one batter earlier, and send the game to extra innings.
Oregon State scored a pair of runs in the 10th inning to win the game as Michael Gretler doubled home the game-winning run followed by Jack Anderson hitting a RBI-single to right field.
Jake Bird (4-1) suffered the loss allowing two runs on two hits in the final inning. OSU's Jake Mulholland (5-0) earned the win throwing the final 2.0 innings.
After three scoreless innings to begin the game, the Beavers scored the game's first run in the fourth inning as Trevor Larnach hit a RBI-single up the middle to bring home Steven Kwan from second base. The Beavers added a run in the fifth inning as KJ Harrison hit a single to center field to plate Elliott Cary for a 2-0 advantage.
Both starting pitchers dominated the early part of the game as Canning threw 7.0 innings allowing two runs on six hits with 10 strikeouts, while Oregon State's Luke Heimlich tossed 7.1 shutout innings allowing two hits and three walks with 10 strikeouts.
The Bruins and the top-ranked Beavers will play game two of this three-game Pac-12 series on Saturday at 6 p.m. (PT) at Jackie Robinson Stadium. The game will be televised on ESPNU with Roxy Bernstein and Wes Clements on the call.
