UCLA Drops Series Finale to No. 1 Oregon State, 2-1

LOS ANGELES โ Jon Olsen threw 6.1 scoreless innings, while Jack Stronach recorded a RBI as the UCLA baseball team dropped the rubber match of a three-game Pac-12 series to No. 1 Oregon State, 2-1, on Sunday from Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Tied 1-1 in the ninth inning, the Beavers would score the game-winning run as Michael Gretler hit a RBI-single up the middle to bring in Adley Rutschman.
The Bruins looked to extend the game in the bottom half of the ninth inning as they were able to load the bases, but OSU countered with five different pitchers in the frame to get the final three outs without allowing a run to score.
UCLA scored the game's first run in the bottom of the seventh inning as Sean Bouchard and Chase Strumpf hit singles to set up Stronach who hit a double down the left-field line for a 1-0 advantage. Oregon State tied the game in the top of the eighth inning on a Tyler Malone sacrifice fly to center field.
Jake Bird (4-2) suffered the loss tossing the final 1.2 innings and allowed one run on one hit, while starter Jon Olsen scattered just two hits without allowing a run in 6.1 innings of work with four strikeouts. Oregon State's Mitchell Verburg (1-0) earned the winning tossing a scoreless inning in relief and Brandon Eisert earned his first save. Jake Thompson started for the Beavers and allowed one run in 7.0 innings with three strikeouts.
UCLA (18-18, 10-8) scored one run on six hits with no errors, while Oregon State (32-3, 16-2) scored two runs on five hits with one error.
UCLA returns to the field on Tuesday when they travel to No. 12 Long Beach State for a midweek matchup before hosting Cal Poly for a three-game non-conference series starting on Friday.
Game Notes: Jon Olsen has not allowed a run in his last 11.1 innings pitched ... Chase Strumpf recorded his sixth multi-hit game of the season ... UCLA is now 6-5 against ranked opponents this season ... Oregon State took a no-hitter into the the seventh inning until Sean Bouchard hit a single to right field with no outs.
