Musselman Named MPSF Player, Newcomer of Week
April 25, 2017 | Women's Water Polo
LOS ANGELES -- UCLA freshman attacker Maddie Musselman (Newport Beach, CA/Corona Del Mar HS) was named both the MPSF Player of the Week and the MPSF Newcomer of the Week today as announced by the league. This marked the first time since the Newcomer award's inception in 2010, that a player won both awards in the same week.
Musselman tied her career high with five goals, as the top-ranked Bruins avenged their lone loss against No. 2 USC, 11-7, and capped an undefeated regular-season run through MPSF play. The win secured the top seed in the MPSF Tournament and a first-round bye. Twice, the freshman broke a tie (including the game's first goal at 7:50 of the opening frame), while two other times, she extended the lead to a game-high four goals. Musselman scored her five goals on just seven attempts, and capitalized on three six-on-five opportunities. She added one earned exclusion and a sprint won.
The Player of the Week award marked the first of Musselman's career. The Newcomer of the Week honor, meanwhile, increased her record total to seven.
Top-seed UCLA will make its first appearance at the MPSF Tournament Saturday, when it faces the winner of No. 4 Arizona State and No. 5 California at 2:30 p.m. That game, as well as two others, will be played on the first day of competition Friday. For more information, visit Tourney Central.
