UCLA Takes Series Opener over Cal Poly, 2-1

LOS ANGELES โ Griffin Canning threw 8.2 innings with 10 strikeouts and Brett Stephens hit a two-run double as the UCLA baseball team won the series opener over Cal Poly, 2-1, on Friday from Jackie Robinson Stadium.
After six scoreless innings to begin the game, UCLA scored the game's first runs in the seventh inning as Stephens hit a two-out double to left-center field to plate Gavin Johns and Ryan Kreidler from first and second base to take a 2-0 advantage.
In the ninth inning, Canning started off the frame with back-to-back strikeouts but Cal Poly would put two runners on base for Michael Sanderson who hit an infield single to cut the lead to 2-1. However, Scott Burke came in with two runners on base and recorded a strikeout for the final out and his second save of the season.
Canning (4-2) earned the win scattering six hits and no walks over 8.2 innings with 10 strikeouts. Erich Uelmen (2-7) suffered the loss for the Mustangs allowing two runs on six hits in 6.2 innings with six strikeouts. Uelmen did not allow a run through his first six innings pitched.
UCLA (20-18) finished the game with two runs on six hits with no errors, while Cal Poly (18-22) ended with one run on six hits and no errors.
The Bruins and Mustangs will play game two of this three game non-conference series on Saturday starting at 2 p.m. (PT) from Jackie Robinson Stadium.
