UCLA Falls to Cal Poly, 6-3

April 29, 2017 | Baseball

LOS ANGELES โ€“ Michael Toglia hit a two-run home run and Daniel Amaral went 2-for-3 as the UCLA baseball team fell to Cal Poly, 6-3, on Saturday afternoon from Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Cal Poly jumped out to a quick 4-0 advantage after scoring a run in the first inning and adding three more in the second inning behind a pair of home runs. UCLA responded with a run in the third inning as Brett Stephens brought home Ryan Kreidler from third base with a ground ball to the first baseman to make the score 4-1.

After the Mustangs pushed across a run in the fourth inning for a 5-1 advantage, Toglia would hit a two-run home run deep over the right-field wall in the bottom half of the frame to cut the deficit to 5-3.

The Bruins looked to tie the game in the sixth inning as they loaded the bases with two outs, but incoming pitcher Michael Clarke would get a ground ball to the shortstop to end the threat.

UCLA starter Moises Ceja (2-4) suffered the loss allowing five runs, four earned, on nine hits in 3.2 innings of work. The Bruins used five pitchers out of the bullpen and they combined to throw 5.1 innings and allowed one run and scattered just four hits.

Cal Poly starter Spencer Howard (4-1) earned the win tossing 5.2 innings allowing three runs, one earned, on six hits with five strikeouts. Clarke picked up his seventh save of the season throwing the final 3.1 inning without allowing a hit.

The Bruins (20-19) ended the game with three runs on six hits with one error, while the Mustangs (19-22) finished with six runs on 13 hits with one error.
