UCLA Clinches Series Win Against Cal Poly

LOS ANGELES โ€“ Scott Burke tossed 1.2 shutout innings in relief to end the game, while Brett Stephens and Kyle Cuellar each collected two hits as the UCLA baseball team earned a 5-4 win over Cal Poly to clinch the weekend series on Sunday from Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Cal Poly scored the game's first run off a sacrifice fly in the first inning, but UCLA tied the game in the bottom half of the frame as Cuellar ripped a single to center field to bring in Jeremy Ydens who scored from second base as he slid just underneath the tag.

The Bruins grabbed its first lead in the second inning with a three-run frame. Stephens started the inning with a two-run double to left-center field and then scored off a RBI-single off the bat Ydens one batter later for a 4-1 lead. UCLA pushed it to a 4-run advantage in the third inning as Cuellar led off the inning with a double and scored off a Michael Toglia sacrifice fly.

The Mustangs cut the deficit to 5-4 after hitting a solo home run in the fifth inning and then scoring two runs in the sixth inning off another home run and a groundball off the bat of the bat of Colby Barrick to plate Nick Meyer from third base.

Cal Poly looked to take the lead in the eighth inning as the Mustangs loaded the bases, but Burke entered the game and recorded a pair of strike outs to end the threat. Burke completed the five-out save by getting the final three outs in the ninth inning for his third of the season.

UCLA starter Jon Olsen (3-1) earned the win tossing 5.0 innings allowing three runs on five hits with five strikeouts, while Cal Poly starter Bobby Ay (1-4) suffered the loss allowing five runs, four earned, on six hits with two strikeouts.

The Bruins (21-19) finished with five runs on seven hits, while Cal Poly (19-23) ended with four runs on 10 hits with two errors.

UCLA returns to Jackie Robinson Stadium on Tuesday when it hosts San Diego State at 6 p.m. for the final midweek game at home for the Bruins this season.
