Late Rally Upends UCLA, 8-6

LOS ANGELES โ Michael Toglia and Jeremy Ydens each hit home runs, while Brett Stephens recorded two hits and scored twice as the UCLA baseball dropped its final midweek home game to San Diego State, 8-6, on Tuesday from Jackie Robinson Stadium.
With UCLA leading 6-5, San Diego State would score three runs in the top of the ninth inning to win the game as Chase Calabuig tied the score with a solo home run to right field and Andrew Martinez would give the Aztecs the 8-6 lead with a two-run home run to center field.
SDSU scored the game's first run in the first inning, but UCLA tied the game at 1-1 as Sean Bouchard ripped a single to left field to plate Stephens.
The Aztecs made it a 3-1 game after the third inning before the Bruins took their first lead with a three-run frame in the bottom half of the third. Ydens hit a line drive solo home run to left field followed by Toglia ripping a two-run blast to right field for a 4-3 lead.
San Diego State would once again tie the game with a solo home run in the fourth inning but UCLA responded again with a two-run inning in the bottom half as Stephens hit a RBI-single to plate Jake Hirabayashi and would later score off a wild pitch to make it 6-4.
The Aztecs made it a one-run game in the eighth inning as Hunter Stratton singled home a run to set up the final inning.
Scott Burke (0-3) suffered the loss allowing three runs on three hits in one inning of work, while SDSU's Jorge Fernandez (1-1) picked up the win tossing a scoreless inning with out strikeout. CJ Saylor earned his 12th save of the season throwing a perfect ninth inning.
UCLA starter Justin Hooper tossed 4.1 innings allowing four runs on five hits with four strikeouts.
UCLA (21-20) finished with six runs on eight hits with one error, while San Diego State (31-15) ended with eight runs on 11 hits and one error.
The Bruins will begin a three-game Pac-12 series at crosstown rival USC starting on Thursday at 6 p.m. (PT) from Dedeaux Field. All three games of the series will be televised live on the Pac-12 Network.
