Brymer to Miss NCAA Tournament Due to Injury

May 11, 2017 | Men's Tennis

LOS ANGELES - Senior UCLA men's tennis player Gage Brymer will be unavailable to play for the No. 5 Bruins in the upcoming NCAA Tournament, as the team captain from Irvine, Calif. (University HS) underwent a successful upper-body medical procedure at UCLA's Ronald Reagan Medical Center on Tuesday. He is expected to make a full recovery prior to embarking on a professional career following his graduation from UCLA this June.

"It has been an honor and a privilege to coach Gage these past four seasons," said UCLA head coach Billy Martin. "I recruited him for his hard work mentality, leadership qualities, passion and love for the game of tennis, which he brought to our program day in and day out. That same work ethic is what is going to make him a successful professional player and I look forward to following his post-UCLA career."

Brymer, who played 13 of his 17 dual matches on Court 1 this season, finishes his senior campaign with a 21-11 record in singles play, including nine wins against nationally-ranked opponents. He is currently slotted at No. 28 in the Oracle/ITA Division I Men's Collegiate Tennis Rankings. He reached a career high of No. 10 in singles on Feb. 21, following a week that saw him dispatch three top-40 opponents. Brymer also went 5-2 from the No. 3 doubles position.

The team captain the past two seasons, Brymer finishes his UCLA career with a 78-33 overall singles record. As a freshman, he registered a 27-6 mark and posted the clinching victory against Ohio State that sent the Bruins to the NCAA Semifinals. He also concludes his UCLA career with a 34-28 overall doubles record. Brymer has twice earned All-Pac-12 honors (2014, 2016) and has been named a Pac-12 All-Academic team member, as well as an ITA Scholar Athlete (2016). He was also chosen as the Rose Gilbert Courage and Character Award recipient at the UCLA Scholar-Athlete Banquet in 2016.

In addition to missing the team tournament, Brymer will also have to pull out of the individual portion of the NCAA Championships, as he was one of 64 players selected to compete in the NCAA singles draw in Athens, Ga.

Added Martin, "Replacing a player like Gage is never easy, but I have complete confidence in our players to step up and help us make a deep run in the NCAA Tournament."

UCLA opens up the 2017 NCAA Tournament against Army West Point on Friday at 1:00 p.m. That match will be played at UCLA's Sunset Canyon Tennis Courts. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for youth/students and can be purchased upon entrance to the facility. The first 100 students (with a valid university ID) will be admitted for free.
